HUGE / WONDERFUL / FREE - Audio Visual Viewing and Downloads Available Online

Two online resources - etvStreamlineSC and Annenberg Media – now provide library users with educational movies, video clips, audio clips, graphics, and supportive educational tests, lesson plans, teacher’s guides and activities.

etvStreamlineSC

You can now get free streaming video for viewing and for copying into power point presentations. This site provides 40,000+ downloadable video clips and 16,000 pictures correlated to South Carolina’s K-12 curriculum standards. Also includes interactive quiz center, pre-produced classroom activities, test, and teachers' guides. To register for password, access the site from the library’s database page or go to http://www.myetv.org/education/streamlinesc  The passcode for Anderson University is B9C8-74B5

Annenberg Media

Annenberg Media (accessible from the library’s database page or at http://www.learner.org/ ) is now offering its huge selection of videos for free online viewing. Thanks to David Reinhart for pointing out this important new resource! The library already owns several of its many video series including Art of the Western World, Discovering Psychology, Voices and Visions, and The World of Chemistry. There are dozens of other series covering the Arts, Education, Foreign Language, Literature and Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and History, and Science.

To locate videos, go to the Blue Bar located near the top of the home page and search by Discipline, Grade, or Keyword. The first time you click on the VoD Icon, a registration form will pop up. You may then view any video at any computer that has Microsoft Windows Media Player and a broadband connection (no dial up). NOTE: Unlike etvStreamlineSC, the contents of Annenberg Media may not be copied

Annenberg Media also offers the Annenberg Channel, a satellite based distributor of workshops, lectures, instructional programs on professional development for teachers. The Annenberg Channel can also be accessed online. There are also free, online classroom resources that supplement the site’s videos.

InfoTrac Revamped – PowerSearch Added

You may have noticed that InfoTrac has undergone a major overhaul. Search screens have been simplified and look cleaner. Search results generate a list of subject heading hyperlinks on the left side of the screen that let you quickly narrow the focus of year search without having to think of another search term. Search results may also be limited by clicking on format buttons (Magazines and Journals, Reference, News, and Multimedia) at the top of the page.

A new function, InfoTrac PowerSearch, gives users the ability to search across multiple InfoTrac databases in a single search giving users access to over 17 MILLION articles at one time. This is only available through the InfoTrac link at the library’s database page. There you can select any combination of nine InfoTrac databases to search at one time. (Eight other InfoTrac databases are excluded.) Should you wish to know more about PowerSearch, go to: http://www.gale.com/Technical/index.htm.

There are now 17 separate InfoTrac databases. Users can click on InfoTrac at the library’s home page to see a list of all databases, or go directly into a specific database from the library’s database page.

Databases Provide Full Text Linking, But Complicate Citing Sources

Many of the library’s databases now provide full text linking to other databases. For instance if you search the MLA International Bibliography for articles on Shakespeare, you will find lots and lots of citations, but no full text. That’s because the MLA International Bibliography has no full text. However, it is now smart enough to communicate with the library’s other databases, and if it determines that another database contains the full text to that citation, it will provide a hyperlink to that article.

That is wonderful news for finding information, but a likely source of confusion for citing it.

Students may or may not know that they have gone into another database.

Even if they know they have gone into another database, they may not know which one they are in.

URLs from printouts are unreliable. Those on HTML documents seldom identify the database (though they might identify the vender). PDF documents may not even have a URL.

Citing Library Databases Using APA

Have you noticed how long URLs are getting? Here is a typical one from Academic Search Premier. How would you like to retrieve that? http://web11.epnet.com/citation.asp?tb=1&_ug=sid+EE59ECF4%2D6619%2D490A%2DAA40%2DB26D062CC3E6%40sessionmgr6+dbs+aph+cp+1+E2F5&_us=frn+1+hd+False+hs+True+cst+0%3B1%3B2%3B3%3B4+or+Date+fh+False+ss+SO+sm+ES+sl+0+dstb+ES+mh+1+ri+KAAACBTB00048733+DB9C&_usd=0000&_uso=tg%5B2+%2D+tg%5B1+%2D+tg%5B0+%2D+db%5B0+%2Daph+hd+False+clv%5B0+%2DY+op%5B2+%2DAnd+op%5B1+%2DAnd+op%5B0+%2D+cli%5B0+%2DFT+st%5B2+%2D+st%5B1+%2D+st%5B0+%2Dlibrary+mdb%5B0+%2Dimh+4CAA&cf=1&fn=1&rn=1

There is a better way. According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, page 278, “aggregated databases” do not need a URL in the citation. Instead, the writer should include a retrieval statement such as this – “Retrieved November 22, 2005, from Academic Search Premier database” or “Retrieved January 16, 2006, from InfoTrac OneFile.”

Check Out the Library Web Page

Thanks to Doug Davison, Peter Harvin, Jane Hawley, and Jason Long, the Library’s Web Page has had a “tune up” – restoring broken links, loading new pages, and updating old, including the creation of an Off Campus Database Access Link. This link allows users to log on using their email name and password to the same databases available to on campus users, thus eliminating the need to communicate off campus passwords for the library’s many databases.

Microfiche Printers

The library’s microfiche printers have gotten, well, old. The repairman has informed us that the older one is now unrepairable. Although it still functions as a reader, it can no longer print. While microfiche printing can continue on the new model, the older machine is the only unit equipped with a micro”film” attachment. This means that although we can still read microfilm, we can no longer print it. Fortunately, almost all of the library’s micro holdings are in the fiche format. Users of interlibrary loan may be inconvenienced though as they will have to take microfilm to the public library if they want to print.

Library’s Database Page Improved

Formerly all EBSCO, ProQuest, and InfoTrac databases went to redirect pages and then to the individual database. Now all databases links are direct links.

Off Campus Access to Databases

The IT Department has created an off campus link to the library’s databases via a “proxy server”. It is not finished yet, but you can try it at https://acproxy.ac.edu. You will be asked to supply your username and password (same as email). This will get you to a very basic page of our databases.

New Databases

InfoTrac: Literature Resource Center (LRC)
The
(LRC) access biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 125,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Scribner Writer's Series includes 15-20 page signed essays on more than 1,600 authors and literary genres drawn from 13 acclaimed Scribner print series. Twayne’s World, US, and English Author series each contains the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, US, or English authors. Also includes Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Dictionary of Literary Biography, Drama Criticism, Poetry Criticism, Short Story Criticism, Children’s Literature Review, Poetry for Children, Literature from 1400-1800, Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism, Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, an Encyclopedia of Literature, a timeline, links to 5,000 web sites, and 1.7 million citations from the MLA Bibliography.

World&I – The library now has password free access to this wonderful, three-in-one site. World&I Journal is for academic libraries. World&I School is for school libraries (and our education program). There is even a World&I Homeschool. This site has something for everybody – current events, academic discussion, multicultural resources, school resources linked to national and state standards, book reviews, and an unusually broad global perspective.

Electronic Journal Portal

New this year is the Electronic Journal Portal, a service that lets users search, identify, and link to all the library’s eJournals by individual title, broad subject area, or database.

If you go to the site and type in the name of a magazine or journal it will provide a list of every database containing that magazine or journal in full text, note the years of coverage, and then provide links to those databases.

You can also search for a broad subject area such as “Business and Economics”, and then narrow it down to a specific subject area such as “Food and Food Industries”, and then even narrower to “Grocery Trade”. The portal will then list all available magazines and journals appropriate to your topic.

We now have 40,371 eJournals located in over 44 full text databases (as well as dozens of other databases). While many eJournals are located in more than one database, 21,222 of these eJournals are unique. Compare this to the 259 current periodicals (paper subscriptions) in the library’s collection.

We hope to have the link activated on the library’s web page soon

New Free Databases

As part of the EJP package noted above, the library has been given access to the following free databases:

Aera SIG Communication of Research

Bioline International

Directory of Open Access Journals

Highwire Press

In the First Person

Making of America Journals (Cornell)

Making of American Journals (Michigan)

PubMed Central

Descriptions of these databases (and hyperlinks) may be found on the library’s  database page.
