III. Course ObjectivesStudents will develop body awareness as it relates to singing. Students will demonstrate efficient vocal technique, including breath management, register adjustment, vocal flexibility and agility, resonance, and articulation, and increased range. Students will develop knowledge of the vocal instrument Students will develop a practice regimen, consisting of a practice plan and daily practice schedule. Students will be able to demonstrate acceptable diction English and Italian. Sophomores – Seniors, German is added as well as French and Spanish. Students will develop an understanding of musical terms and musical symbols and be able to demonstrate that knowledge by singing and performing vocal literature assigned to them Students will develop acceptable performance demeanor and demonstrate that demeanor through performance in student recitals and master classes
IV. Methods of Assessing Achievement of Learning Objectives. Students will sing prepared pieces each lesson and receive critiques from the instructor. Students will discuss composer and musically historical information relative to the pieces they are singing.
V. Grading Policies Students are graded on perceived vocal and musical progress, level of preparation and commitment based on the following: Musical and vocal preparedness – singing assigned literature as outlined in the course objectives. Completion of Song Analysis. Completion of Supplementary Reading Assignments Completion of translation of pieces in foreign language, composer and historical information. Completion of Listening Assignments (See Attached Form)
The instructor will discuss with the student their perceived progress that day. The student will receive a grade based on the following: Song Performance Evaluation for each piece performed during the lesson (see rubric); Song Analysis (see attached) for each piece performed during the lesson; listening assignments. Students will be notified of their grade at the end of each applied lesson. The student’s final semester grade will be as follows: Average of Weekly Lesson Grade: 55% (Freshman Studio Classes part of this) Two Master Classes/recitals 20% Jury Grade 25% In the Spring semester, there are no juries for those students who have passed the Freshman barrier.
VI. Content Outline Students are assigned repertoire appropriate for their stage of vocal and musical development. Students will prepare the pieces musically, by singing correct pitches and rhythms, and musical expression, and with correct diction. Dramatic interpretation develops throughout the term.
VII. Methods of Instruction The instructor will provide vocalises and assign vocal literature for each student’s specific vocal needs. She will demonstrate vocal technique and guide the student to respond to sensations and sounds as the student sings. The instructor will give continual feedback to the student. The student will discuss with the instructor the style, form, translation, composer information, and historical significance of each assigned piece. The student will also discuss their listening evaluations at each lesson.
VIII. Assignments and Course Calendar In addition to weekly lessons (as posted) Freshmen are required to attend a In the voice class, students will learn fundamental vocal pedagogy and will also receive student and instructor feedback from in-class performances. All students will perform on two Master Classes in the Fall Semester or one Master Class and one Recital. If a student performs on the Studio Recital or in Opera Workshop, this performance will fulfill the 090 Requirement. Additional Studio Master Classes may be scheduled. Students are required to listen to three vocal selections each week and complete a listening evaluation sheet. |
