MUA 110-S  Voice, Secondary   One Credit Hour

 

 I. Course Information:

    Private voice instruction for music majors or minors in BA, BA in Church Music, or BME programs with voice as their secondary instrument.  Majors must complete 6 hours in their secondary instrument and must receive a grade of “C” or better to receive credit.  Minors need two hours of instruction.  One half-hour lesson will be scheduled for individual students.

 III. Course Objectives

Students will develop body awareness as it relates to the function of singing.

Students will demonstrate efficient vocal technique, including breath management, register adjustment, vocal flexibility and agility, resonance, articulation, range extension.

Students will develop knowledge of the vocal instrument and demonstrate that knowledge by being able to discuss the parts of the mechanism, the way in which these parts function, and how the function of the instrument relates to improved efficiency of the instrument. 

Students will develop a practice regimen, consisting of a practice plan and daily practice schedule.

Students will be able to demonstrate acceptable diction English and Italian.

Students will develop an understanding of musical terms and musical symbols and be able to demonstrate that knowledge by singing and performing vocal literature assigned to them.

 

 IV. Methods of Assessing Achievement of Learning Objectives.

       Students will sing prepared pieces each lesson and receive critiques from the instructor.  Students will discuss composer and musically historically information as relative to the pieces they are singing.   Students are encouraged to record each lesson.   The instructor will discuss the assignments and goals for each week.

 

 V. Grading Policies

    Students are graded on perceived vocal and musical progress, level of preparation and commitment based on the following:

Musical and vocal preparedness – singing assigned literature as outlined in the course objectives. 

Completion of  Supplementary Reading Assignments

Completion of Song Analyses (see attached)

Completion of Listening Assignments (See Attached Form) to be turned in each week.  Failure to do so will drop the weekly lesson grade by one letter.

 

 At the conclusion of each lesson, the instructor will discuss the lesson evaluation with the student. 

The semester will be the average of  the weekly lesson grade; 100%

 

 VI. Content Outline

    Students are assigned repertoire appropriate for their stage of vocal and musical development.  Students will prepare the pieces musically, by singing correct pitches and rhythms, and musical expression, and with correct diction.  Dramatic interpretation develops throughout the term. 

 

 

 VII. Methods of Instruction

    The instructor will provide vocalizes and assign vocal literature for each student’s specific vocal needs.  She will demonstrate vocal technique and guide the student to respond to sensations and sounds as the student sings.  The instructor will give continual feedback to the student.  The student will discuss with the instructor the style, form, translation, composer information, and historical significance of each assigned piece.  The student will also discuss their listening evaluations at each lesson.

 

 VIII. Assignments and Course Calendar

    In addition to weekly lessons (as posted) students may sing on one of the Secondary  090 Recital Hours as assigned.  Students are required to listen to two vocal selections each week and complete a listening evaluation sheet.

 

 IX. Textbooks and Supplementary Reading

Students are assigned and are responsible for securing assigned repertoire.  Articles from Musical Journals may be assigned as relevant.
