A study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in community populations.  Topics include comparative measures of disease frequency, evaluation of disease prevention methods, and planning and evaluation of public health effectiveness.  Students  will use the principles and methods of epidemiology to study problems in healthcare management.  

A review of the major legal and ethical issues in the organization and delivery of health care.  Discussion of health law includes fraud and abuse, physician arrangements, negligence and medical malpractice, informed consent, and privacy.  Discussion of ethics includes organizational, professional and clinical ethics.  Students engage the course material through case study discussion and analysis.

A discussion of the organizational characteristics of primary, secondary, and tertiary health delivery organizations.  We review management issues involving governance, clinical services, human, fiscal and information resources, and community-based services.  Students apply the course content using case studies and current events.

Courses

An introduction to the U.S. health care system, with emphasis on current issues in U.S. health policy, the organization and financing of the U.S. health care system, and a brief comparison to the health care systems in other developed countries.  This course serves as a foundation for the remaining courses in the Health Services Management concentration.
